Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the day that the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, forever changing a large number of lives, while forcing the USA to enter World War II. It was ‘A Date Which Will Live in Infamy’ as Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed, as he asked to get a Declaration of War.
As the Japanese dive bombers launched their surprise attack my uncle, Albert Matthews, who passed away earlier this season, was stationed in Pearl Harbor. He was a fortunate survivor, unlike the 2,403 Americans killed on that terrible day. Every year on December 7th, he would tell his story and we all would listen, wondering what it must have felt like to really have experienced what he’d decades ago.
